This seminar is an introduction to ethnographic fieldwork.
Ethnography means learning to understand a social world by entering it, spending time in it, and paying attention to what happens there. At its core are the relations between you and your interlocutors. They will shape your analysis.
In media research, ethnography is particularly valuable when we want to understand how people use, make, regulate, or are shaped by media – and media can be understood here in the broadest possible sense.
The course is also an experiment in how AI might change ethnography. To pursue this question, you will join a group - and each will do fieldwork under different AI conditions (some no AI, some extreme AI).
