Electron Microscopy in Materials Science
Course Description:
This course provides an in-depth introduction to the principles and applications of electron microscopy in materials science. Students will explore both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including fundamental imaging techniques, electron diffraction, and spectroscopy methods such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
Key topics include:
- Electron beam interactions with materials
- Imaging contrast mechanisms
- Sample preparation techniques
- Advanced analytical techniques for microstructural and chemical characterization
- Recent developments in high-resolution and in situ electron microscopy
Through a combination of lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions, and data analysis exercises, students will gain practical experience in operating electron microscopes and interpreting microstructural data. The course is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in materials science, physics, chemistry, and related disciplines.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the physical principles underlying electron microscopy techniques.
- Operate electron microscopes and optimize imaging conditions.
- Analyze and interpret microstructural, crystallographic, and compositional data.
- Select appropriate electron microscopy techniques for specific materials research questions.
- Apply electron microscopy to solve real-world materials science problems.
