This English-speaking seminar deals with environmental history and its relation with nation-building, colonialism and state administration. Along with theoretical and methodological questions, we will discuss specific case studies on the relationship between nature, the nation and its (post-)colonies in the long nineteenth and in the first half of the twentieth century.
Students are expected to actively participate in the seminar by reading and understanding the texts, completing the assignments and presenting their paper project during one thematic session (this includes autonomously searching for as well as analyzing historical sources).
