This course explores the dynamic interrelationship of music, religion and spirituality in a multicultural context by considering both historical developments and contemporary issues in music and religions in different parts of the world.
In this seminar these main topics will be reviewed and discussed:
· The music and rituals within Buddhism, Judaism, Zoroastrian and Islam
· The most important differences in views of music within these four religions
· Methods and theoretical perspectives in the study of religion and music
· How religious music is used in popular culture and advertising
And also how does the media shape public understanding of religion? During the semester there will be 3 guest presenters and musicians from different religious communities. The seminar is held in English because science is based on international networking, where English is almost always the language of choice. However, please do not be discouraged by this, as none of us are native speakers and any language insecurities are completely normal. Your linguistic ability in the foreign language has no influence on your final evaluation. Students from different disciplines and backgrounds of study are invited to participate as each will bri
ng a valuable and unique perspective to the class discussions.
