The course is intended to offer you an overview of how different linguistic features used in different kinds of texts and employed for different kinds of purposes and effects can be analysed. (How) Does the language used in, e.g., university textbooks differ from that in, for instance, novels or newspapers? What is special about the language used in either of these texts, and have similarities and differences always been like this or are there any changes – e.g., caused by the increasing use of electronic communication compared to classic books?
We will clarify what makes a text a text, which criteria can be used to distinguish different types of texts and then examine how texts differ linguistically (and stylistically) depending on their intended function in a specific situation. After an introduction to some theoretical background, we will apply the theoretical knowledge to existing texts and when writing our own texts.
