This course provides an in-depth exploration of the relationship between language and institutions, examining how institutional contexts shape discourse practices and, conversely, how language constructs and reproduces institutional power. Drawing on sociolinguistics, critical discourse analysis and (multimodal) corpus analysis, students will engage with a range of institutional discourses and setting - from academia, the media and law enforcement - to develop a nuanced understanding of how institutions generate meaning, influence identities, and frame social realities.
