Grammar in Use

In this introductory grammar course, we focus on building a solid foundation in the fundamental structures and rules of English grammar, with an emphasis on both form and practical application in academic contexts.

Key topics in this course include, but are not limited to:

  • Basic grammatical rules: Understanding the primary rules governing nouns, verbs (including tenses and modals), sentence structures, and conditionals.
  • Parts of speech: Detailed exploration of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and their roles within various sentence types.
  • Sentence and clause structure: Identification and analysis of simple, compound, and complex sentences, including the functions of subjects, verbs, objects, and complements.
  • Usage in context: Application of grammatical forms in authentic written and spoken texts to foster comprehension and communication.
  • Error identification and correction: Practice in recognizing and correcting common grammatical errors, self-editing, and developing strategies for improved academic writing and speaking.
  • Grammar meta-language: Acquiring the terminology necessary to discuss and analyze grammar clearly and accurately

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Identify and employ key grammatical structures accurately.
  • Analyze the grammar of both their own writing and published texts.
  • Edit their writing for grammatical correctness and clarity.
The course involves a mixture of presentations, self-study, practical assignments, and regular assessments (such as quizzes and exams), ensuring students can both understand and apply grammatical concepts in real-world academic scenarios. The course ends with a final 45-minute exam.
