In this introductory academic writing course, students will learn the essential skills for composing well-structured and clear academic texts.

The key skills covered in this course include:

  • Clarity and Precision: The ability to express complex ideas clearly and accurately, using language that is straightforward and specific to ensure the reader understands the arguments and explanations.
  • Critical Thinking: Skills to analyze information, arguments, and evidence critically, including evaluating sources for reliability, recognizing biases, and constructing well-supported arguments.
  • Research Skills: Proficiency in locating, evaluating, synthesizing information from various sources, and integrating evidence appropriately to support claims.
  • Organization: The ability to structure writing logically and coherently, including mastery of paragraph and essay structures, topic sentences, transitions, and overall flow of ideas.
  • Academic Conventions: Understanding and applying formal academic conventions such as proper citation and referencing to avoid plagiarism, use of metalanguage, and acknowledgment of sources.
  • Writing Process: Competence in all stages of writing, including pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing to improve clarity, coherence, and correctness.
  • Formal and Objective Style: Using formal language, objective tone, and appropriate rhetorical structures to meet academic expectations

The course is taught in a workshop format, and you are expected to engage in peer reviews, as well as complete self-study assignments. Through these, you will develop critical reading and writing skills necessary for academic success. By the end of the course, you should be able to produce structured essays, apply effective writing processes, and use academic language and citation with accuracy.

Credit is awarded on successful completion of all assigned work.
