Grammar Workshop

In this introductory course for teacher candidates,  we work on building a foundational knowledge of English grammar and the ability to apply this knowledge in classroom teaching.

Key components in this course include:

  • Essential grammatical concepts: instruction on sentence structure, verb groups, adverbials (including adverbs, adverb groups, and prepositional phrases), noun groups, and cohesive devices. These topics are introduced systematically, beginning with larger units (like clauses) and moving toward more specific grammatical elements.
  • Metalinguistic awareness: developing the ability not only to understand grammar rules but to use appropriate terminology (metalanguage) to discuss and analyze language.
  • Error analysis and classroom application: Opportunities for students to engage with exercises, such as identifying parts of speech in sample texts, highlighting adverbials or noun groups, and correcting or justifying student grammar use—building both their understanding and confidence in teaching.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Accurately identify and use core grammatical structures.
  • Explain grammar concepts clearly with appropriate terminology.
  • Apply grammar knowledge in recognizing and correcting common errors.
The course involves a mixture of teacher-led input, self-study, practical assignments, and regular assessments (such as quizzes), ensuring students can both understand and apply grammatical concepts in real-world academic scenarios. The course ends with a final exam after the main teaching period.
