Social science has traditionally viewed humans as individuals, separated by our bodies from others, from nature and animals by civilization and moral authority. Post-human approaches challenge this view, and in different ways seek to re-insert humanity into the world. Cross-cultural insights from anthropology have been critical to this endeavor. In this seminar, we will be introduced to a series of debates on how non-humans enter the human orbit, and how these ‘persons’ influence human sensibilities, or, conversely how humans shape and domesticate these others. We’ll closely read the new book by Webb Keane (2024) “Animals, Robots & Gods” on moral relations, as well as supplementary texts. Students will be encouraged to re-think the “boundaries of the social world” (Luckman 1970).
