This course introduces students to the profoundly textual universe that surrounds us, where meaning is primarly textual - whether we are concerned with user-generated texts or those created by generative AI tools. We will engage with texts, their textuality and texture from two complementary perspectives. Beginning with text analysis, we will explore the structure and organisation of different types of texts and establish criteria for text quality, comprehensibility and effectiveness. Text examples of diverse backgrounds and fulfilling a variety of purposes are used as materials for analysis. Text production, on the other hand, provides a fresh perspective on texts produced by a variety of writers and AI tools, focusing on essential textual patterns and stages of textual organisation. Whenever possible, we will use English language corpora to examine the wealth of textual data of relevance to different discourse communities.
