For all members of the academic community, including students, practitioners and researchers, writing is the single most important acitvity. Becoming a proficient writer in English however poses a major challenge to those whose first language is not English. At the same time, achievement in Higher Education (HE) and academic success are largely conditioned by academic literacy skills. In this course, students will be introduced to the fascinating field of Second Language Writing (L2 writing), focusing on theory, practice and analysis of writing produced by students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL). Of particular relevance is the analysis of L2 writing corpora and how current research can inform writing instruction, for example, on the basis of Data-driven learning (DDL) or the use of Do-it-yourself-corpora in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classroom.
