In this course, we will be concerned with words and their internal structure, investigating how processes of word-formation differ from inflection, for instance. The main emphasis will be placed on frequent and recurrent patterns of present-day English word-formation, specifically two important types of structurally complex words: derivation and compounding. It will be shown that the formation of new words is anything but random; rather, it follows clearly definable rules. You will be able to test and apply these rules on the basis of hands-on analyses, thereby gaining experience in corpus linguistics and methods of data analysis and interpretation.
