This class enquires into the topic of ‘social and technical mediation’. Traditionally, studies of “language” fall under humanities departments, “media” falls under its own category and “technology” is for engineers and scientists. But what do these three have in common? Can we consider them as social? If so, what kind of social role do they play and how do humans interact with them? This course asks the question: What does it mean to mediate? How does mediation work? Who has thought about it in different ways? What do these three fields have in common? How are they different? And what happens at the intersection of language, media and technology?
