Gender equality is discussed in various United Nations (UN) commissions, programs, funds and specialized agencies. It is also firmly anchored in the 2030 Agenda, a global policy framework set by the United Nations in 2015, of which the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) form the core. The SDGs are built around the UNs understanding of the economic, social, and ecological dimensions of sustainable development. Thereby, the UN integrated gender dimensions not only within Goal 5 on gender equality but also within more than half of the other SDGs. To understand the discussion on Gender Equality and its importance regarding the debate on sustainable development, the seminar will provide an overview of the UN's history, structure, and working method. Subsequently, we will critically discuss the SDGs’ history and relate it to previous international attempts to attain sustainable development and gender equality. Finally, the participants will prepare case studies on how individual countries seek to put gender equality into practice and thus practice the working methods of Model United Nations (MUN). MUN is an academic simulation of the United Nations where students play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real-world issues with the policies and perspectives of their assigned country. There will also be an opportunity to get further credit points by participating in a MUN-Conference.
