This is the second part of a four-semester lecture series that provides a survey of the key texts, genres, developments of North American literature. The survey offered in this part covers the time from the early republic until the Civil War, with a brief outlook to postbellum literature. The authors studied in this course include Royall Tyler, Hannah Webster Foster, Charles Brockden Brown, Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Mark Twain.
