This course will give students a chance to read -- and thoroughly discuss and analyze -- George Eliot's Middlemarch. This very long and complex novel is often posed as a challenge for students of literature, and this course gives us an opportunity to meet this challenge by creating a platform to systematically explore its key themes, such as desire, agency, and the question of human perspective. We will approach the text from both a literary and cultural studies perspective, considering the novel in its historical and cultural moment as well as paying close attention to the narrative strategies used.
