In
this seminar we will read and discuss Shakespeare's shortest play. The
main focus is on the playwright's dramatic art as it reflects
conventions of acting and early modern mentalities. Scrutinizing the
cultural context in which the play was written, in particular with
respect to notions of kingship and witchcraft, we will resort to
contemporary scholarship to explore the ideas circulated by the play. We will read the whole play in the course of this semester. When attending this seminar, you will have to read sections of Macbeth carefully in preparation for each session, and you will have to read and study additional material. Prior to attending the first session of this seminar, you must purchase the following edition: William Shakespeare. Macbeth. Ed. Sandra Clark and Pamela Mason. London: Bloomsbury, 2015.
