This seminar focuses on the connections between (mathematical) word problems on the one hand, and more conventional forms of literature on the other. We will analyze some historical word problems and take them seriously as narratives and formal experiments. We will also reflect upon connections between narrative and formal logic more broadly –– e.g., in philosophical (Käte Hamburger’s approach) and economic terms (Michael Suk-Young Chwe’s approach).

While no knowledge of formal logic beyond High School/"Abitur" level mathematics is required, participants should be curious to experiment with the syntax and semantics of formal languages. Before the beginning of the semester, participants must download, print out, and read at least p. 5-36 of /forallx: An Introduction to Formal Logic/ by P.D. Magnus.
