For
a research discovery
to have a sustaining impact on science, it has to be accessible in the literature in the form of a
publication. And it is a key competence
of a well-educated scientist to be able to present scientific results clearly
and unequivocally to the scientific community with a well-written, meaningful
publication. But especially beginners tend to be hesitant and even timid of
writing their first reports and manuscripts. Therefore, in this hands-on
workshop, it will be shown by representative examples and with practical exercises
that the actual writing and assembly of a scientific manuscript may be a
straightforward and even pleasant process. Specifically, general conceptual guidelines will be presented for writing
and submission of a scientific manuscript; and typical rookie mistakes and
frequently encountered pitfalls will be addressed. In addition, the
reviewing/revising and publishing processes will be described. And advice will
be given for appropriate dealing with coauthors, editors, and reviewers. Special
attention will be paid to aspects that are specific for publications in STEM
subjects.
